St. Mary’s Church Has Been Designated as a Landmark
Archbishop of New York Timothy Michael Dolan made a visit on December 9, 2023 to celebrate the church’s 175th anniversary. During his visit, Archbishop Dolan referred to the church as the “Cathedral on the Hudson.” It came as a surprise to the parish when the Archdiocese of New York announced that it would be closing the church, effective July 1, 2024.
The Archdiocese claims the church needs $10 million worth of repairs and ordered scaffolding to be place around the church.
The Archdiocese of NY banned St. Mary’s Parish Council and its parishioners from engaging in fundraising activity to make repairs to the church.
Many parishioners became concerned that the archdiocese would sell the church site to commercial real estate developers. To protect the church, members of St. Mary’s Friends submitted an application for the building to be designated as a landmark.
On July 16, 2024, the Yonkers City Council voted unanimously to grant landmark status to the church building. The Archdiocese of New York had planned to close the church on July 1, 2024, but for now its doors remain open.
