St. Mary’s Church is the oldest Roman Catholic parish in Yonkers, New York. The church was built in 1848 by immigrants. Originally the St. Mary’s church parishioners were Irish immigrants. Later came the Italians, Portuguese, Germans, Poles, Czechs, and Slovaks. The population has evolved through the years to mirror the latest waves of immigrants. Masses today are said in Arabic, Spanish and English.
We live all over the United States but share a common connection to St. Mary’s Church. We are current parishioner, former parishioners, as well as the descendants of parishioners, some of whom date back to 19th and 20th Centuries. We are of every ethnic group, race, age, gender, and faith. We share one thing in common: We are passionately devoted to saving St. Mary’s Church.
We Remember
“St. Mary’s has been a part of my and my life for over 66 years, and part of my family’s life for even longer; it is and has been a source of spiritual comfort and has helped during times of stress and sorrow, as well as times of celebration. St. Mary’s will always be a part of my heart and soul.”
–Anthony Kunny
“St. Mary’s Church is very important to me and my family because my great grandparents, grandparents and parents were all married there. More importantly, the church building is historically significant.”
–Sarah Barysauskas
“The church is an immigrant community and has always been an immigrant community.”
–Dr. Matel Hassan
“St. Mary’s is a church that helps immigrants. The focus is on providing food and clothing, and reaching out to the new influx of immigrants who are asking for help.”
–Cesar Quadra
“I am hopeful that someday I will be able to bring my grandchildren to visit St. Mary’s Church, a place of historical beauty that tells the story of who Yonkers once was and who it still is today.”
